Smith and Gibson Named Top Performers in March

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Baseball pitcher Tucker Smith and softball pitcher Shannon Gibson have been named the Georgia Southwestern State University Department of Athletics top performers for the month of March.

Smith, a redshirt junior from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., won three games and posted a 2.40 earned run average over seven starts and 45 innings on the mound for the Hurricanes. He struck out 30 batters and only walked nine. Smith threw two complete games in March. The right-hander held Flagler College to one earned run over nine innings on March 8, while striking out eight and walking one, then went the distance against Lenoir-Rhyne University with no earned runs, no walks and seven strikeouts on March 23. He's one of four pitchers in the Peach Belt Conference to throw a complete game in conference play this season. Smith currently leads the Peach Belt with an overall ERA of 1.92 and three complete games and ranks seventh with 56 strikeouts.

Gibson, a junior from Colborne, Ontario, was 7-2 inside the circle for GSW in March. The right-hander appeared in 12 games, started nine, threw six complete games and posted one shutout. Her best outing was the three-hit, shutout win (4-0) over Shorter University on March 13. Her 2.27 earned run average was tops on the team for the month. Gibson currently leads the Peach Belt in conference wins this spring (5) and ranks ninth overall in ERA (2.15).
