Hurricanes Donate Over 1,200 Canned Goods To Salvation Army

AMERICUS, Ga. -- During the month of November, our student-athletes tallied over 30 hours of community service while hosting a four-day canned food drive. Partnered with Havery's Supermarket and the local Salvation Army, over 85 of our student-athletes volunteered hours standing in front of Harvey's to help collect cans.

Altogether, they finished with 1,271 canned goods in total. Harvey's, who is a sponsor of GSW Athletics, matched the total amount donated by GSW to amount to a total of 2,542 canned goods that will be donated to the Salvation Army. Harvey's also donated eight turkeys to the Salvation Army where they will be given to families in need during the holidays.

"It's a great way for our athletes to give back, especially during the holidays when people are in need the most," Assistant Director of Athletics for Community Engagement and Head Softball coach Nicki Levering said. "We want to give back in order to help everyone in our community."

To date, our student-athletes has volunteered over 1,700 hours, with more than a third of those hours being within and helping the community.

This year's total was more than doubled what was raised last year as Levering credited the success to more student-athletes helping this year along with a more prominent social media push.

GSW will close out the year hosting Operation Child where they will partner with First Baptist Church and pack shoe boxes for kids filled with toys and school supplies.
