Gibson and Smith Named Top Performers in February

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Softball pitcher Shannon Gibson and baseball pitcher Tucker Smith have been named the Georgia Southwestern State University Department of Athletics top performers for the month of February.

Gibson, a senior from Colborne, Ontario, closed out the month with three consecutive shutouts, including the third no-hitter of her career on Feb. 26 against Albany State. She tallied a 5-2 record inside the circle and finished with a 2.28 earned run average. Gibson struck out 32 batters during the month while walking only 11. She currently has the sixth lowest ERA in the Peach Belt Conference and her opponents batting average of .179 ranks seventh.   

Smith, a senior from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., was red hot over his three Peach Belt starts, throwing 23 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. He picked up two conference victories and was named the PBC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 25. Smith made program history by becoming the first Hurricane to earn a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association weekly award when he was named NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 24. Smith struck out 26 batters during the month while walking only seven. He currently leads the Peach Belt with the lowest ERA in conference games.
