'Canes sweep Montevallo, win streak at 9 games

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - After defeating Montevallo, 6-2, on Sunday, the Georgia Southwestern baseball team completed a Peach Belt Conference series sweep of Falcons with a pair of wins on Monday afternoon at Kermit A. Johnson Field. GSW took Game 1 of the doubleheader, 7-1, and finished the day with a 5-2 victory.

GSW, winners of nine straight, improves to 12-6 overall and 3-0 in the PBC. Montevallo dips to 9-9 overall and 0-3 in the PBC. The Hurricanes have won the last six games against UM.

Southwestern opened up Game 1 on Monday in the seventh innning with a five-run frame.

Beau Parker and John Duran led the offense for the game collecting three hits and two RBIs apiece.

Jody Sellars (1-1) tossed a gem for GSW, going six innings, allowing one unearned run while scattering four hits.

In the nightcap, Montevallo scored two runs in the first before GSW put five unanswered runs on the board, including four in the fifth inning for the win.

Corey Benson led GSW batters with a three-hit performance.

Zach Whitman (2-1) picked up his second win of the spring by scattering nine hits over six innings, holding UM to the two runs in the first. Gray Carden earned his third save with a scoreless ninth.

The Hurricanes stay in Alabama and head to Auburn-Montgomery for a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday.
