Hurricanes 9-game win streak snapped by AUM, 4-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team was unable to hold a 3-1 lead on Tuesday night at Auburn-Montgomery as the Senators scored two runs in the seventh inning and the deciding run in the ninth to defeat the Hurricanes, 4-3.

It was the first time in 11 opportunities this season that GSW was unable to get the win with after holding the lead through six innings.

The Hurricanes fall to 12-7 overall and Auburn-Montgomery improves to 14-12.

GSW jumped out to the early lead when Andrew Anderson slapped a bases-loaded single down the right-field line in the first inning to score John Duran.

AUM tied the game in the third behind a pair of singles and a GSW throwing error.

The Hurricanes put together a two-out rally in the sixth when Paschal Poston walked, Corey Benson singled up the middle, Stephen Gaylor walked and Beau Parker doubled down the left-field line to score two runs.

After being set down in order in the bottom half of the sixth, the Senators began their comeback in the seventh. AUM scored two runs behind two walks, an error and a single.

Brian Wheeler started the AUM ninth with a single to right field. The next batter, Chezz McCann, was unsuccessful on his sacrifice bunt attempt and Wheeler was thrown out at second. After Chris Clements struck out swinging, Jorden Johnson ended the ballgame when he found a gap in center field and brought McCann around from first to score the winning run.

Parker and Anderson led GSW batters with two hits apiece.

Wheeler finished 3-for-3 with a walk to lead AUM.

Hurricane starting pitcher Brandon Vazquez threw 6 1/3 innings, allowed three runs - two earned - and scattered six hits. He struck out two and walked one. Cameron Blinn came in for 1/3 of an inning and Stephen Daneman (1-1) takes the loss, allowing one run in two innings of action. Daneman struck out three and gave up two hits.

AUM starter Josh Smith tossed three innings and allowed four hits and one run. He struck out one and walked four. Nathan Brown (1-1) picks up his first win of the season after holding GSW scoreless over the final 1 2/3 innings. The Senators sent four pitchers to the hill.

Southwestern returns to Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against No. 10 North Georgia at Hurricane Stadium.

Putting men on base: The Hurricanes have scored 35 runs over the their last six games on 61 hits, but it hasn't been the long ball bringing the runners around to score. GSW has 51 singles, nine doubles and a triple to go with 30 walks over that span.
