North Georgia takes first two in series with GSW

AMERICUS - The 10th-ranked North Georgia baseball team won the first two games of a three-game weekend series at Hurricane Stadium, defeating Georgia Southwestern, 2-0, in the opener and 5-2 in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Hurricanes suffer their first two league losses of the season, falling to 12-9 overall and 3-2 in PBC play. North Georgia improves to 14-6 overall on the year, moving to 3-5 in the PBC.

North Georgia broke a scoreless game in the sixth inning of Game 1 with a Kenny Bellavance RBI-single to left field.

The Saints put together three singles in the ninth to add an insurance run.

Trent Franzago (3-3) takes the hard-luck loss after throwing a complete game in which he allowed two runs and seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

John Duran and Andrew Anderson had two hits apiece for GSW in the opener. The Hurricanes outhit North Georgia, 9-7.

In the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, Southwestern surrendered a run in the first inning, but answered with two in the second. With Anderson on base as the result of a walk, and Andrew Archer on via a single, Jarrod Taylor cleared the bases with a double to center field. 

North Georgia regained the lead in the top of the third after scoring two runs and led the rest of the way, adding single runs in the seventh and the ninth.

The Hurricanes left five runners in scoring position over the final seven innings

Zach Whitman (2-2) gave up three runs - two earned - over five innings on six hits. He walked four and struck out six. Stephen Daneman tossed three innings, surrendering two runs and six hits. Gray Carden pitched a scoreless inning after getting all three of the batters he faced to strike out swinging.

Beau Parker finished 2-for-5 in Game 2 to lead Hurricane hitters. Anderson went 0-for-1 with three walks and scored a run.

GSW and North Georgia complete the weekend set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
