Whitman tosses shutout; 'Canes win series at Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Zach Whitman threw a complete-game shutout for Georgia Southwestern in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Flagler, leading the Hurricanes to a 4-0 victory in the deciding game of the weekend series at Flagler Stadium. The Saints won Game 1 of the twinbill, 2-0.

Both sides were held to four hits apiece in the first game on Saturday, but Flagler cashed in two of theirs for runs in the seventh, aided by a pair of walks and a wild pitch.

The Hurricanes stranded a runner on third base to start the seventh, their only runner in scoring position in the ballgame.

Jody Sellars (1-3) pitched 6 2/3 innings, gave up both Flagler runs, walked six and struck out seven in the losing effort for GSW. Gray Carden threw a scoreless 1 1/3 innings, striking out four.

In the series finale, GSW scored two in the third, all the support Whitman would need, a run in the fourth and one more in the sixth. The Hurricanes racked up 10 hits, including four from John Duran and a solo home run from Corey Benson, his second in four days. Andrew Archer and Michel Coffey added RBIs.

Duran finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Coffey went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Whitman (3-2) provided the Hurricanes with their first shutout of the spring after facing only five batters more than the minimum. He held the Saints to five hits, walked two, struck out eight and retired Flagler (12-18, 3-9 PBC) in order on five occasions.

Southwestern (18-13, 6-6 PBC) looks to move six games over .500 for the second time this season when Albany State comes to town on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game.
