Hurricanes storm back to defeat AUM, 8-4

AMERICUS - A three-run home run by Corey Benson sparked a string of seven unanswered runs by the Georgia Southwestern baseball team as the Hurricanes rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Auburn Montgomery, 8-4, on Wednesday evening.

GSW moves seven games over .500 at 21-14 with the win. Auburn Montgomery, ranked 17th in the latest NAIA poll, drops to 29-15.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when an Andrew Anderson ground out scored Stephen Gaylor from third.

AUM struck for two runs in the fourth and added two more in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.

Benson tied the ballgame with one swing in the bottom of the sixth for GSW with a three-run shot to left that scored Andrew Archer and Zach Moss. The home run was Benson's fourth of the spring.

A pair of walks, three singles and an AUM error in the seventh accounted for four Hurricane runs. Archer, Jared Allen and Moss collected RBIs. Moss plated Archer and Allen with his single down the left-field line.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision.

Matt Weaver tossed 5 2/3 inning for GSW, allowed six hits and four runs - two earned, while striking out four and walking one. Stephen Daneman (2-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. He struck out one and walked one. Gray Carden struck out two in the ninth to close the door on the Senators.

Chris Allen threw the opening three innings for AUM and allowed one run on four hits. The Senators trotted four more hurlers to the mound in the game. Reliever Forrest Holifield (1-2) surrendered the home run to Benson and is charged with the loss.

Archer, Moss and John Duran finished with two hits apiece to lead GSW at the plate.

Hunter Cross and Jorden Johnsen had two hits apiece for AUM. Both of Cross' hits were doubles.

The Hurricanes hit the road for a seven-game road trip that begins at Lander on Saturday at 1 p.m.
