Hurricane Hitters Struggle at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team was swept in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at West Alabama, 4-1 and 9-6. Hurricane batters struggled against UWA pitching, striking out 26 times while collecting only nine hits in the two games.

GAME 1: GSW 1, UWA 4

West Alabama broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when B.J. Smith scored from third on a passed ball.

The Tigers opened the game up in fifth with a pair of RBI singles, the first coming from Micah Reaves. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Reaves came around to score on a Matthew Magee double to left center.

GSW's lone run came in the sixth when John Duran scored from first on fielding error by the Tiger's left fielder.

UWA tacked on the final run in the bottom half of the inning.

Trent Franzago (0-1) suffered the loss for the Hurricanes after tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs - three earned - on six hits. He struck out seven and walked three. Cameron Blinn closed things out for GSW with 2 1/3 scoreless innings on the hill.

UWA starter Barry Meeks (1-0) threw six innings of two-hit ball. He struck out 12 and surrendered one unearned run. The Tiger pitching staff racked up 18 strikeouts overall in the opener.

GAME 2: GSW 6, UWA 9 

A five-run opening frame paced West Alabama in the nightcap. The Tigers tallied six hits and capitalized on one GSW error in the inning.

UWA added a run in the second to extend the lead to six runs.

Another crucial GSW error led to two more runs for UWA in the fourth and the Tigers were ahead 8-0.

The Tigers final run came in the fifth off a sacrifice fly and was set up by a GSW passed ball.

In the sixth inning, it was the Hurricane's turn to capitalize on errors when two UWA miscues and a Gabby Ramirez double led to three GSW runs.

The Hurricanes added three more runs in the seventh when Ramirez struck again, this time with a two-RBI single to right. Zach Moss drove in the final run with a single to center.

GSW stranded eight men in Game 2, with five coming in the last two innings.

Matt Weaver (1-1) was the losing pitcher in the nightcap. He threw 2 1/3 innings, allowed eight hits and four earned runs.

Jessie Boyd (1-1) tossed 5 1/3 innings for UWA (2-4) and struck out six. He surrendered three hits and three unearned runs.

Ramirez and John Duran finished with two hits apiece for GSW (1-4) in the second game. Ramirez drove in four. 

The two teams meet again on Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrap up the series.
