Barry Rallies To Hand GSW An Opening Day Loss

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team started its 2013 season about as well as you ask, scoring four runs in the first inning of Friday's Opening Day matchup with Barry University. Unfortunately, the hosts rallied for five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to hand the Hurricanes a 10-5 defeat.

Back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from John Duran, Corey Benson and Josh Sanders in the first propelled GSW to an early 4-0 advantage.

Barry answered with a five-run inning in the third to capture its first lead of the season.

Jarrod Taylor drove in Zach Moss with a double for the Hurricanes in the seventh inning to tie the contest at 5-5.

BU added three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to pull away for the win.

Benson and Sanders finished with two hits apiece to lead the GSW offense. The Hurricanes stranded 10 runners on base.

BU had five players finish with two hits apiece. The Buccaneers belted five doubles in the game and tallied 12 hits overall.

GSW starter Frank Ambrosino tossed five innings and allowed five runs on six hits but did not factor in the decision. Chase Burnfin (0-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs in an inning of relief. Drew Cataldo pitched the final two frames for the Hurricanes.

Tyler Petsch (1-0) threw three innings of relief and held GSW to a single run to pick up the win for the Buccaneers.

Game 2 of the weekend series is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
