'Canes Complete Two-Game Sweep Of Stillman

AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern starting pitcher Frank Ambrosino threw five innings of near-perfect baseball to lead the Hurricanes to a 5-2 win over Stillman College on Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Stadium. Ambrosino faced one batter over the minimum, allowed one hit and struck out four before exiting the game.

Despite Ambrosino's efforts, it took a late offensive surge of four runs in the final two innings to complete the two-game series sweep of Stillman.

GSW improves its record to 9-19 this spring while the Tigers fall to 12-12.

Josh Sanders put the Hurricanes on the board in the second inning when he drove home Corey Benson with a RBI single to right-center field.

Stillman tied the game in the seventh, but Dylan Folds came on in relief for GSW to minimize the damage, hold Stillman to one run and force the Tigers to leave the bases loaded.

The Hurricanes regained the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning behind a RBI single from Randall Sheffield that scored Jarrod Taylor. Stephen Eldridge crossed the plate on the next at bat when Sheffield stole second and forced an errant throw from the Stillman catcher.

John Duran belted a triple to deep center field in the eighth inning that provided an insurance run when Zach Moss scored. Taylor brought Duran home on the next play with a single through the left side of the infield.

Sanders led all batters with three hits. Sheffield and Moss added two hits apiece.

Folds (3-0) gets credited with the win for GSW. Ryan Mosley threw 1 2/3 innings in relief of Ambrosino. Drew Cataldo helped the 'Canes get out of trouble in the eighth and Bray Bishop picked up his first save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth.

Stillman brought five pitchers into the contest.

GSW left 11 men on base. Stillman stranded seven.

The Hurricanes hit the road for a two-game series at Flordia Tech starting Friday at 6 p.m.
