GSW Prevails Over Shorter in Tuesday Matinee

ROME, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes (15-29) scored six runs over the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 6-4 victory over the Shorter Hawks (13-31) Tuesday afternoon at the Ledbetter Complex in Rome, Ga.

Trailing by a single run entering the fifth inning, the 'Canes notched a pair of runs off four hits to take a 2-1 advantage.

Shorter earned a run in the home half of the fifth to even up the contest but Southwestern broke the game open in the sixth inning as the 'Canes used three hits to punch in four runs in order to take a 6-2 advantage.

Shorter drew closer as the Hawks added a run in both the sixth and eighth innings but  senior Bray Bishop struck out the side in order in the ninth inning to earn the save as GSW held on for the 6-4 victory.

Stephen Eldridge and Josh Sanders led the way at the plate for Georgia Southwestern as Eldrige went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple while Sanders notched 4 RBIs as the senior finished 2-for-4 on the outing.

Starting GSW pitcher Earl Dupree earned the win for Southwestern as the freshman tossed 5.2 innings while allowing three runs off six hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Bishop was credited with his fourth save of the season as he struck out three in one successful inning.

Georgia Southwestern will wrap up the 2013 season this weekend as the Hurricanes return to Hurricane Field for a three-game series against USC Aiken. The start time for the first game of Saturday's senior-day doubleheader will be at 1 p.m.
