Hurricanes Split With Braves

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Georgia Southwestern baseball team traveled to play fellow Peach Belt opponent UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon. The Hurricanes split the first day of the two day series.

GAME 1: GSW 5 UNCP 4

Senior Pitcher Matthew Suggs carried the Hurricanes to a 5-4 win after pitching all nine innings. Suggs gave up one home run that brought in one other run, in the bottom of the third inning. Other than that after facing 36 batters, Suggs struck out seven.

Big defensive plays were made by Jarrod Taylor, Josh Sanders and Les Cromer as each of them picked up two double plays.

Corey Benson was back to his usual self after going to bat four times he had three hits and two runs, one of which was a double. This double was in the second inning that later turned into the first run of the game when Neal Chambless hit a sacrifice fly out to bring Benson home.

Chambless had three RBIs recorded for the day. He included one double into his three at bats and one run, which he accomplished in two hits.

Devyn Newberry and Sanders added in a run each to give GSW the lead.

UNC Pembrokes' pitcher Zach Andrews (1-2) took credit for the loss after giving up GSW's winning runs in the eighth inning.  Andrews pitched three innings and gave up three runs and four hits. Logan Cook started the game and pitched six innings facing 28 batters and gave up only seven hits and two runs.

GAME 2: GSW 1 UNCP 13

UNC Pembroke came out early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. These runs were made by a sacrifice fly out to bring in one. Then the next runs were from a homerun by Knight over right field, also bringing in another Brave.

Knight hit another homerun in the third inning, this time her only brought himself around the bases. In the fourth inning, the Braves accomplished four more runs. One run was walked in with bases loaded. Then next three runs came from a double hit by Knight down the right field line. With a pitching change, the inning finished four runs, two hits, no errors, and three left on base.

The Braves kept it coming in the next inning as Cole hit a single to center field allowing Zecca to score. Then the final hit of the inning came when Fraga scored from a grounded out ball.

Three more runs came from the Braves in the seventh inning. Two came after Edgerton hit a double into center field. Knight finished things off as he hit a double into left field to bring Edgerton full trip.

The Hurricanes were able to have one taste of a run when Stephen Eldridge hit a single into left field then all batters were able to advance on a throwing error. This error allowed Evan Alderman to finish the trip around the bases.

Braves Garrett Hickman (5-1) took credit for the win after pitching eight innings. Collin Kellermeyer made an appearance for the Braves in the final inning allowing one run and hit.

Zac Wittmus (0-6) took credit for the loss after pitching in 3.2 innings and giving up eight runs and eight hits. Dylan Brown, Earl Dupree, and Coty Graham also made appearances during the game collectively allowing six hits and five runs.

The Hurricanes play the last game of the series with UNC Pembroke on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
