MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Georgia Southwestern jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second inning on Friday evening at John Kurtz Field and held on late to upend No. 22 Georgia College, 7-5, in Game 1 of their Peach Belt Conference weekend baseball series. The Bobcats defended their home turf on Saturday, handing GSW a pair of losses to close out the weekend.

With only one regular season game remaining on its 2017 schedule, GSW holds an overall record of 18-27. The Hurricanes finished 10-14 in the Peach Belt, in a tie for eighth place, and must wait until Sunday for confirmation of their postseason conference tournament bid. Georgia College is 30-11 overall, 16-8 in PBC play. For GSW, picking up even one road win against the 22nd-ranked team in the country was impressive as it was only the third loss Georgia Collgege suffered at home in 24 games this season.

The Hurricanes close out their regular season on Tuesday with a short trip to Albany State for a 5 p.m. game.

GAME 1: GSW 7, #22 GEORGIA COLLEGE 5

The Hurricanes feasted on the long ball early. Alex Kranick led off the game with a home run to left field. In the second inning, back-to-back jacks from Will Redding and Dakota Long paced a five-run frame. Redding hit a two run shot. Jonathan Martin delivered a two-out, two-run single later in the Hurricanes at bat.

GSW had a couple of chances to extend its lead, but left the bases loaded in the fourth inning. The Hurricanes managed to push across their final run in the sixth on an infield ground out with the bases loaded, but left two runners on to end the inning.

GSW center fielder Evan Alderman led all batters with three hits. Will Redding was 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk for the Hurricanes. 

Brandon Benson and Garrett Green had two hits apiece to lead Georgia College.

GSW starting pitcher Kyle Spinks (2-3) was outstanding through the opening five innings. Over that span, Spinks held the Bobcats to one unearned run and five hits. He ran into a little trouble in the sixth and was relieved by Drew Powers who threw 2 2/3 innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out four. Mitch Holloway closed the door on Georgia College by forcing a game-ending double play to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Georgia College starter Brady Walsh (5-2) was pulled after 1 2/3 innings having allowed eight hits and six earned runs. Perry Keith held GSW to one run over the next 4 1/3 innings and Kane Keith followed with three scoreless frames.

GAME 2: GSW 6, #22 GEORGIA COLLEGE 23

The Bobcats scored five runs in the first inning, seven more in the second and never looked back to cruise to a 23-6 win in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.

GSW pulled within 5-4 after scoring three runs in the top of the second inning off RBI singles by Redding, Josh Logan and Alderman, but the Hurricanes couldn't sustain the torrid pace necessary to match the 22nd-ranked Bobcats.

Kranick, Alderman, Redding and Zach Barron collected two hits apiece. Kranick and Barron belted doubles. Redding drove in three.

Wesley Wommack went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Georgia College. Logan Mattix and Phillip Stiles added three hits. Georgia College smacked four home runs in the game with Stiles delivering two of the blasts.

GAME 3: GSW 10, #22 GEORGIA COLLEGE 25

Unfortunately for GSW, it was much of the same offensive firepower from Georgia College in the nightcap. Georgia College scored nine runs in the first inning and led 13-1 after the second. The Hurricanes could get no closer than within 10 runs the rest of the way.

Barron and Long were both 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run for GSW in the finale. Redding added three hits, one of which was a double, and two RBIs. Martin extended his current hitting streak to 17 games and Redding has hit safely in 14 straight contests.

Cal Gentry turned in a perfect 6-for-6 performance with a double, a home run and seven RBIs to lead the Georgia College attack. Benson, Mattix and Green had four hits apiece. Nate Schmal hit three doubles.
