Weekend Recap: Walk-Off Homer Completes Sweep For UNG

DAHLONEGA, Ga. -  The Georgia Southwestern State University baseball team was swept in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at the University of North Georgia over the weekend. North Georgia won the opener at Bob Stein Stadium on Saturday, 7-1, followed with a 17-4 win and capped the series off with a three-run, walk-off home run in the finale on Sunday to win, 5-3. 

Jared Jones and Josh Logan led GSW at the plate over the series as both went 4-for-10. Jones belted two home runs and had four RBIs.

GSW exits the weekend with a 3-12 overall record and an 0-9 mark in Peach Belt play. North Georgia improved to 7-8 overall, 3-3 in the PBC.

The Hurricanes resume action on Saturday when they travel to St. Augustine, Florida, Saturday for a doubleheader as part of a three-game Peach Belt series against Flagler College. 


GAME 1: NORTH GEORGIA 7, GSW 1

The Nighthawks scored a run in the second inning, another in the third and blew the game open with four in the fourth.

GSW scored its lone run in the eighth inning as Dakota Long opened the frame with a double and later came around to score on a ground out of Jonathan Martin.

Andy Moore went 2-for-4 in the opener to lead the Hurricanes.

Starter Mitch Holloway (1-3) suffered the loss. Harrison Timberlake threw 4 1/3 innings of relief and held North Georgia to one run and three hits. He walked one and struck out three.


GAME 2: NORTH GEORGIA 17, GSW 4 

The Nighthawks scored two in the first inning, two more in the third and put the game out of reach with six runs in the fifth.

GSW scored a run in the seventh when Jones led off the frame with a solo home run, his first of the season, and pushed across three in the eighth inning, highlighted by an RBI-double from Kole Clark and an RBI-single from Martin.

Bradley Hough went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Hurricanes. Clark and Jason Baita added two hits apiece.

Starter Stewart Tyler (0-3) exited in the fourth inning with GSW trailing 4-0. Jared Donalson, Sage Holderfield and Hayden Martin combined to get the final 18 outs.


GAME 3: NORTH GEORGIA 5, GSW 3 

Starting pitching was superb for both sides through the first five innings of the finale. GSW finally broke the deadlock in the sixth. Baita opened the inning with a single, made his way to third on a Logan single and scored off a sacrifice fly by Moore.

North Georgia answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Andres Perez led off with a home run, his fourth of the series, and a pair of singles and two passed balls allowed the Nighthawks to take a 2-1 lead.

With Moore on base after a one-out single, Jones delivered his second blast of the series in the ninth, a two-run shot to center field, to put the Hurricanes ahead 3-2.

The leadoff man for North Georgia drew a walk in the bottom half of the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a fly out, Perez was intentionally walked and Connor Corbitt proceeded to send a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to end the ballgame.

GSW starting pitcher Kyle Spinks threw 5 2/3 innings, allowed two runs, walked five and struck out one before making way for Matt Hubbard (0-1), who threw the final three innings, held North Georgia to two hits, walked three and struck out three.
