The eighth-seeded GSW baseball team saw its memorable run in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament fall a tiebreaker short of a championship game appearance after knocking off the top seed North Georgia, 4-2, on Friday morning and the fifth seed Georgia College, 9-2, in the first game Saturday morning. GSW ran out of steam in a 14-4 loss to Young Harris immediately following the emotional win over Georgia College and Young Harris went on to match GSW with a 2-1 record in pool play after wrapping up a game with North Georgia late Saturday night to secure a berth in Sunday's championship game. Young Harris advanced by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker over GSW.
The GSW baseball team opened its three-game weekend Peach Belt Conference series against Lander with a thrilling 9-8, come-from-behind win in 12 innings on Friday night at Hurricane Stadium, then proceeded to take the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, 11-7. Lander pulled out a 6-4 win in the finale. Jonathan Martin went 9-for-14 in the series. Tyler Skelton and Matthew Mamatas had six hits apiece.
GSW center fielder Hunter Foster was named the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Freshman of the Week by the league office Tuesday afternoon. Foster hit .500 in four games for the Hurricanes last week with two doubles, an inside-the-park home run and three RBIs.
