GSW Baseball Inks Seven on National Signing Day

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern baseball team inked seven new student-athletes during national signing day last week, the team scored four incoming freshmen and three junior college transfers. 

"We are excited about this group of players and they are a representation of what this program is about moving forward," head baseball coach Josh McDonald said. "Coach (Matt) LaMothe hit the ground running this fall and did a great job leading the efforts along with the assistance of Coach (Sherrard) Freeman. We will continue to go out to identify and build relationships with players that will be instrumental in the future success of this program."

Incoming Freshmen:

Christian Griffin is an outfielder from Buford, Ga. who attends Buford High School. Griffin was named to the Perfect Game High School Honorable Mention List and has also won the Ryan Daniel Leadership Award and Citizenship Award. Griffin was named on the Honor Roll multiple times throughout his three years in high school. He recently played for the East Cobb Colt .45'S 17u Team.

Samuel Marques is a short stop from Marietta, Ga. who attends Lassiter High School. Marques has earned accolades such as the 2017 Lassiter Junior Varsity Most Valuable Player, 2017 Lassiter Junior Varsity Gold Glove, 2018 2nd Team All-Region Selection, 2018 All-State Honorable Mention and was named to the 2018 Cobb County High School All-Star Team. Marques is also a part of the National Honor Society and has been a Scholar Athlete and named to the Honor Roll throughout three years in high school. He recently played for the East Cobb Prime-Zilleox 17u Team. 

Riley Powers is a right handed pitcher from Vidalia, Ga. who attends Vidalia High School where he was named All Region Pitcher. His brother, Drew Powers, previously pitched at Georgia Southwestern from 2015-2017.

Joseph Roden is a right handed pitcher from Locust Grove, Ga. who attends Locust Grove High School. Roden has earned All-Region and All-State awards. He recently played for the Rawlings Southeast 17u National Team.  

JUCO Transfers:

Tanner Jones is a right handed pitcher who is transferring in from South Georgia State College. 

Cody Ogilvie is a right handed pitcher from Hazlehurst, Ga. who is transferring in from South Georgia State College. As a freshman, he appeared in 13 games, going 3-1 and pitching 32.2 innings. Ogilvie attended Jeff Davis High School and was named 2016 and 2017 First team All Region and State, 2016 and 2017 Team Most Valuable Player and Pitcher of The Year along with being named the 2017 AA State Player of the Year. Ogilvie was also named to the Honor Roll all four years in high school while also being a member of the BETA Club. 

Alejandro Vazquez is a an infielder from Miami, Fla. who is transferring in from Mercer County. As a freshman, Vazquez appeared in 44 games where he posted a .308 batting average. He accounted for 30 runs, 23 runs batted in, four stolen bases and one homerun.
