Georgia Southwestern State University head baseball coach Bryan McLain has announced the hiring of Nate Ferrell as an assistant coach for the 2017-18 season.

An infielder throughout his career, Ferrell will work with the Georgia Southwestern infielders and hitters this season. 

Ferrell joins the Hurricanes staff after playing two seasons of Independent League professional baseball with the Alpine 06 Cowboys, Lake Erie Crushers and Florence Freedom. In 2016 Ferrell played in 60 games with the 06 Cowboys, hitting .302 with seven doubles, 41 runs scored and finished second on the team with seven home runs.    

A native of Griffin, Ga., Ferrell finished his collegiate baseball career at Central Arkansas University where he hit a combined .275 in two seasons with the Bears. He was the team's second-leading hitter in 2014 at .309, with 55 hits, 32 runs, 11 doubles and 31 RBI.

Ferrell graduated from Central Arkansas in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in Health Sciences.
