'Canes Remain Undefeated

AMERICUS - The 21st-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 68-58 victory over Fort Valley State on Monday evening in the Storm Dome.

It was the visiting Wildcats who jumped out to the early lead on Monday. After Southwestern's Evan Mobley put the Hurricanes up 6-5 with a layup at the 17-minute mark, Fort Valley State went on a 15-6 run to take a 20-12 lead with 11:11 remaining in the opening half. The eight-point advantage would prove to be FVSU's largest of the night.

GSW chipped away and erased the deficit by the half as the two teams entered the break tied at 33-33.

Fort Valley State (0-1) regained the lead early in the second period, but could only open the gap to five points (44-39) with 14:09 remaining.

From there, it was advantage Hurricanes.

GSW went on a 15-3 run. Free throws from Colin Slotter and Phillip Brown along with a basket from Matt Shaw were sandwiched between 3-point buckets from Evan Mobley and Slotter to put the Blue & Gold ahead 54-47 with eight minutes to go.

FVSU would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. 

GSW finished the game shooting 38.9 percent (21 of 54) from the floor. FVSU shot 50 percent in the first half and finished 41.8 percent (23 of 55) for the game.

The big difference was inside on both ends of the court where the Hurricanes held lopsided advantages in rebounds (43-30) and points in the paint (30-16).

GSW's Evan Mobley led all scorers with 16 points and added six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Phillip Brown posted his second-consecutive double-double with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance on Monday. Colin Slotter chipped in 12 points off the bench.

Corey Hunter scored 14 for the Wildcats on 6 of 7 shooting. Detrius McCall added 11.

Southwestern travels to Montevallo, Ala. on Friday to meet North Alabama at 3 p.m. in the first day of the University of Montevallo's Coca-Cola Classic.
