'Canes Tame Division-Leading Mountain Lions, 94-82

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Mother Nature was the only one who could slow down Alan Arnett on Saturday.

The Georgia Southwestern guard poured in 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for his first double-double of the season in leading the Hurricanes to a 94-82 win over Young Harris College.

Arnett was simply amazing as he connected on 8 of 14 shots, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, and made 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Not only did he grab a game-high 16 boards, but he also dished out five assists, blocked three shots and had three steals.

GSW has won two in-a-row and improves to 9-11 overall and 5-8 in the PBC. Young Harris drops to 14-5 and 9-3 in conference play. YHC entered the game atop the West Division of the Peach Belt Conference.

The Hurricanes snapped an eight-game home winning streak for Young Harris and handed the Mountain Lions their first home loss since the first game of the season. GSW also becomes the first Peach Belt Conference opponent to win a league game on the Mountain Lions' home floor.

Arnett and his teammates were left to enjoy the victory from a hotel in a nearby town as a snow storm made its way through the area. GSW hopes to return home on Sunday.

An upset victory looked like a fantasy early on as the Moutain Lions stormed to a 19-point advantage, 30-11, with 8:23 left in the first half.

GSW responeded quickly with a 10-3 run over the next two minutes to trim the deficit to eight. A Matt Shaw layup with 1:14 to go before the intermission had pulled Southwestern within three, 41-38, but Frank Adams scored for YHC on the final possession of the period to make the score 43-38 at halftime.

Milos Kleut gave GSW its first lead of the game, 47-46, with his jumper at the 17:44 mark.

YHC scored four unanswered points to move ahead for the final time, 50-47.

Daryl Davis scored six-straight points during GSW's ensuing 10-0 run to put the Hurricanes ahead for good. GSW led 59-50 with 13:50 to go.

Tyler Gunnett converted a 3-point play at the 12:19 mark to give GSW a 15-point advantage, 67-52. In the span of 16 minutes, GSW outscored YHC by 34 points (56-22).

An Arnett dunk with 1:33 to play put an exclamation point on the victory. The Hurricanes spent the rest of the game at the foul line and connected on 11 free throws before the final horn.

Davis had a stellar game for GSW as well, coming off the bench to pour in a career-high 23 points - behind 10 of 14 shooting - and grab eight rebounds. Jamon Hawkins chipped in 12 points. The 16 boards by Arnett was the most by a Hurricane player since Phillip Brown grabbed 19 rebounds on Dec. 14, 2011 at Clayton State.

YHC had five players score in double figures. Malcolm Jackson led the Mountain Lions with 19 points. Adams added 18.

The Hurricanes host Columbus State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in an important inner-division tilt that could decide who goes to the postseason tournament and who stays home.
