AMERICUS - When you're hot, you're hot. Monday evening in the Storm Dome the Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team was en fuego. The Hurricanes made 10 of 19 attempts from 3-point range (52.6 percent) and 22 of 27 free throws (81.5 percent) in a 72-58 victory over Armstrong State University.

The Hurricanes have won three of their last four games and evened their overall record to 8-8 while improving to 3-6 in the Peach Belt Conference. Armstrong fell to 5-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

Armstrong grabbed control of the game early, scoring the first six points of the night and eventually opening a 20-11 advantage with 9:52 remaining in the first half. That's when the fire was lit. GSW answered with a 15-2 run sparked by a Damien Leonard 3-pointer and back-to-back bombs from Deric Rudolph to pull ahead, 26-22. The Hurricanes would not relinquish their lead the rest of the way.

GSW took a 31-29 advantage into the half and opened the second period with nine unanswered points to extend its margin to double digits.

Armstrong cut the deficit to two, 40-38, with 10:53 to play but a 13-1 GSW run sparked by 3-pointers from Rudolph and Kevin Burnell, along with an old-fashioned 3-point play from Carlton Geathers gave the Hurricanes some breathing room once again. Southwestern's lead hovered around double digits until the final horn. 

The Hurricanes finished with a higher shooting percentage than Armstrong (36.1 percent) and dished out seven more assists, 15-8. GSW won the rebounding battle as well, 44-29, but committed seven more turnovers, 18-11.

Redding led all scorers and tied a career-best with 20 points. He made 5 of 8 from the floor and 9 of 11 from the free throw line while adding nine rebounds and four assists. Redding moved into a tie with Antonio Campbell for third in the GSW NCAA-era record books for most assists in a season at 81. Redding has 10 games to catch the leader, Marlon Rivera, with 126.

Rudolph connected on 5 of 7 attempts from beyond the arc on the way to his 15-point evening. Leonard scored 14 points and Josh Birchfield pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Geathers had his best game as a Hurricane, scoring seven points in seven minutes of action.

Emmanuel Tiluscar paced Armstrong with 15 points. Shaquiell Mitchell chipped in 14 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Southwestern hosts No. 15 UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
