Season Comes To An End In PBC Quarterfinals

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team drained 12 3-pointers Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as 19th-ranked UNC Pembroke defeated the Hurricanes, 88-83, in the Peach Belt Conference tournament quarterfinals at the English E. Jones Center.

The game was even throughout as there were eight ties and 18 lead changes with neither side holding an advantage of more than seven points.

The Hurricanes knocked down 3-pointers on three consecutive trips down the floor in the middle of the first half to open their largest lead of the afternoon, 32-27, and held the advantage until the 2:58 mark. GSW trailed at halftime, 43-41.

Southwestern grabbed its final lead of the season when Kevin Burnell made a layup with 4:43 remaining to go ahead 72-71. UNCP sank a pair of free throws on its ensuing possession and held on until the final buzzer.

Darius Redding drained consecutive 3-pointers in the final 29 seconds, after GSW had fallen behind by seven points, to keep the upset hopes alive, but the Braves sank their final four free throw attempts to put the game away. UNCP made 25 of 30 from the charity stripe in the contest.

Both sides shot the ball well throughout. GSW made a blistering 56 percent from the floor only to have UNCP close behind at 50 percent.

Redding, who didn't travel with the team and was battling the flu, finished with a career-high 21 points as he made 7 of 9 shots and was a perfect 3 of 3 from beyond the arc. He dished out four assists to become GSW's all-time leader for assists in a season during the program's NCAA era and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Burnell turned in a career-best performance as well with his 20 points coming off the bench. Burnell hit 6 of 10 from the floor and sank all six of his free throw attempts. Deric Rudolph made 5 of 10 from long range to finish with 15 points. Damien Leonard added 14 points.

Quamain Rose paced UNCP with 21 points and a game-high  seven assists. Ben Jacobs added 14 points off the bench. Brandon Winford scored 12 and grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Griffin Pittman made 9 of 12 from the charity stripe en route to his 11-point afternoon.

The Hurricanes finish their season with a 15-12 record having won five of their final seven games. UNCP improved to 25-4 overall, 15-1 at home, and advanced to host Montevallo in the semifinals of the PBC tournament.
