Montevallo Hands Hurricanes A Homecoming Loss, 74-68

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team suffered a 74-68 defeat Saturday afternoon against the University of Montevallo in the Storm Dome.

GSW fell to 7-14 overall this season, 5-9 in the Peach Belt Conference, while Montevallo won its second straight game and improved to 14-7, 8-6 in the PBC.

It took the schools a combined eight consecutive missed shots and more than three minutes until the first score of the game, a 3-pointer from Hurricane big man, Rakeem Hicks. GSW held a slim lead until the 10:52 mark when Javonte Douglas made a layup to put Montevallo on top, 9-8.

GSW regained the lead four more times in the back-and-forth first half and the teams went into the locker rooms tied, 28-28, at the break.

The Hurricanes outrebounded Montevallo, 20-17, over the opening 20 minutes and was slightly more efficient shooting (40.0 percent vs. 33.3 percent).

The opening three minutes of second half was just as tight and Brandon Price made a layup with 16:55 remaining to even the score at 35-35. Douglas made one of two free throws on the ensuing Montevallo possession and Falcons would never trail again.

Montevallo went on a 10-1 run to build a small cushion and led by as many as 12 points with 4:36 to play. GSW pulled to within five points (70-65) with less than a minute remaining, but the Falcons made four of six free throws to close out the ballgame and leave with the victory.

Devin Watson dropped in 22 points behind 8 of 13 shooting and added six rebounds along with a game-high three blocks to lead GSW. Tyrone Wooten added 15 points and a team-best seven boards. Price scored 12 points.

Douglas posted a double-double with a game-high 24 points and 16 rebounds to lead Montevallo. Kevin Kelly scored 17 points and Talan Whitaker chipped in 11.

The Hurricanes travel to North Georgia on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
