Canes Win Home Opener Behind Morgan Double-Double
AMERICUS, Ga. -- Jalen Morgan posted his second consecutive double-double of the season to lead the Georgia Southwestern State University men's basketball team to a 68-59 victory over Fort Valley State University in the Storm Dome Wednesday evening.

Morgan drained nine of 12 shots and sank all three attempts from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 21 points to go with his 11 rebounds.

How It Happened: The Hurricanes never trailed in the game.

A 14-0 run over a five-minute stretch in the middle of the first half gave GSW some breathing room and a 30-13 lead.

The Hurricanes led 46-29 at the break.

Devin Watson made a layup with 16:14 remaining to give GSW its largest lead of the night, 52-32, and Grant Howard sank a 3-pointer with 12:23 to play to make the margin 20 points (57-37) for the final time before Fort Valley State began to chip away at the Hurricanes lead. GSW was held scoreless for the next four minutes and the Wildcats pulled within eight. Watson delivered a clutch 3-pointer to stop the bleeding and push the lead back into double digits. Fort Valley State got within seven points inside the final minute, but a pair of Quenten Taylor free throws sealed the win for the Hurricanes.

GSW finished with a 37-33 edge on the glass, had six more assists than the Wildcats (19-13) and was more efficient shooting (44.1-38.3 field goal percentage).

Who Stood Out: Taylor and Watson scored in double figures along with Morgan. Taylor finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Watson added 12 points, hit two of three from beyond the arc and dished out three assists.

Fort Valley State (0-3) was led by K'Viontae Williams and Shawn Foxbrennen. Williams scored 21 points and Foxbrennen grabbed 10 rebounds.

Up Next: The Hurricanes (1-2) make the short trip to Albany State for a 3 p.m. non-conference tilt Saturday. GSW doesn't host a game for almost a month (Dec. 13).
