That Was Kwei Too Fun

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Career nights by Kwei Lartey and Jamari Dean propelled the Georgia Southwestern State University men's basketball team to an 80-72 Peach Belt Conference victory over Flagler College in the Flagler Gymnasium Wednesday evening. Lartey led all scorers with 32 points. Dean was next on the list with 23. The Hurricanes tandem combined to make 20 of 30 shots (66.7 percent).

How It Happened: Neither side could get it going offensively for the first 10 minutes of the game. GSW grabbed the lead, 11-10, with a Dean layup at the 10:02 mark to kick off a stretch where the freshman scored eight of the Hurricanes points during an 11-2 run. GSW led 30-24 at the break.

Flagler pulled within two points, 53-51, with 10:06 to play, but the ensuing 15-4 run by GSW proved to provide enough of a cushion to withstand a Saints rally in the closing seconds. Flagler cut the margin to four points, 74-70, with 32 seconds remaining. Lartey calmly sank his next four free throw attempts to help seal the win.

GSW (4-21, 2-17 PBC) wasn't particularly accurate from 3-point range (7 of 22), but made up for it inside the arc (24 of 36). Flagler struggled from long range as well (2 of 14), but finished shooting 57.4 percent overall. GSW forced five more turnovers (17-12) and had two more steals (7-5). Flagler finished with a slight edge in rebounding, 29-26. The Hurricanes held a lead for 30 minutes while was out in front for a total of 3:53.

Who Stood Out: Lartey and Dean stole the show. They accounted for 20 of the 31 field goals made by the Hurricanes and almost half of the rebounds (12 of 26).

Flagler (8-17, 5-14 PBC) has lost eight of its last nine games. The Saints were led by Gedi Juozapaitis, who posted team highs in points (20) and rebounds (7). Only two Flagler players scored in double figures.

Up Next: GSW travels to Augusta University on Saturday for its final road game of the season. Tip is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
