Thomas Takes Over; Hurricanes Improve to 4-0

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Soloman Thomas scored 23 of his game-high 35 points over the final 20 minutes to lead the Georgia Southwestern State University men's basketball team past Brewton-Parker College, 98-76, Monday evening in the Storm Dome.     

How It Happened: It took the Hurricanes a few minutes to get clicking offensively as Brewton-Parker grabbed its only lead of the evening at the 15:45 mark of the first half, 7-6. Thomas threw down a one-handed dunk moments later to put GSW out front and the Hurricanes never trailed again.   

Thomas drilled a 3-pointer with 8:35 to go before the break to give GSW its largest lead of the half, 28-16.

The Hurricanes led 48-40 at halftime.

Brewton-Parker quickly pulled within three points, 49-46, to open the second half, but a 3-pointer from Thomas with 16:40 remaining put the Hurricanes back up by double digits. The Hurricanes hovered around a 12-point lead until the final 7:20 when they utilized a 21-5 run to go up by 26 and eventually close with the 22-point victory to remain undefeated (4-0) this season.            

GSW continues to improve its long range shooting. The Hurricanes connected on a season-best 8 of 19 (42.1 percent) from 3-point range on Monday, but also ran up a 12-point advantage in points in the paint, 40-28. The Hurricanes made nine more free throws than Brewton-Parker, 28-19, and won the rebounding battle, 44-38.

Who Stood Out: Thomas drained 6 of 9 from long range and made 7 of 8 from the charity stripe to lead the Hurricanes. GSW had four of its five starters score in double figures. Jalen Cameron scored 17 points and Abdul Dial added 12. Jamari Dean extended his double-double streak to four games with a 13-point, 15-rebound performance. Dean added a game-high five assists and four steals. Keshawn Gibbs came off the bench to chip in 12 points behind 5 of 6 shooting in his debut for the Hurricanes.  

Brewton-Parker (4-6) was led by Jamarcus Scott with team highs in points (17) and rebounds (7). Jack Gray chipped in 14. The Barons had four of five starters score in double figures.  

Up Next: The Hurricanes have a week to prepare for Fort Valley State (2-4). GSW hosts the Wildcats on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Hurricanes opened their season on Nov. 12, with a 72-68 win at FVSU.
