Gibson individual champion, 'Canes finish strong at AFLAC/Cougar Invite
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern men's golf team moved up seven spots from day one at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational to finish tied for 10th in the 21-team field on Tuesday. GSW finished ahead of the tournament hosts, second-ranked Columbus State and tied No. 6 Florida Southern. Sophomore Craig Gibson shot the low round of the tournament, a 6-under (65) on Tuesday, to finish 5-under-par and win individual medalist honors.
Gibson shot a bogey-free final round at the par 71 Green Island Country Club and birdied four holes (3,6,7,11) before notching an eagle on the 14th to win the tournament by a stroke over Chesley Gunn from Valdosta State. Gibson started the second round tied for 28th.
Rounding out the individual scoring for GSW, Christopher Hall (75-71=146) moved up 18 spots from the first day to finish 4-over-par, tied for 43rd amongst the 105 golfers in the field; Reese Moseley (74-73=147) finished a stroke behind Hall; Nate Gahman (75-77=152) and Will Smith (75-86=161) tied for 84th and 98th, respectively.
Barry shot a 6-under par 278 for Tuesday's final round and finished the tournament with a 7-under 561 to win. North Alabama finished a distant second, 10 strokes behind Barry.
GSW and West Georgia were the only two teams in the invitational to have not received votes in the latest Golf World/Nike NCAA Division II Coaches Poll.
The Hurricanes complete their fall schedule participating in the Queens Invitational at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., beginning Monday.
