Georgia Southwestern men's golfer Craig Gibson was named to the NCAA Division II PING All-Region Southeast Team on Thursday afternoon by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He becomes the first student-athlete in GSW history to receive an NCAA All-Region award.
Gibson was a 2010 Peach Belt All-Conference first team selection and South/Southeast Super Regional qualifier.
The All-Region distinction caps a tremendous sophomore campaign for Gibson. He was the individual medalist at the 21-team, 105 player, Aflac/Cougar Invitational in the fall behind a second round 65 – the Peach Belt’s second-lowest round of the year. Following the victory, he was named the PBC Golfer of the Week on October 9, 2009, becoming only the second GSW golfer to receive the weekly award.
He followed his win with a third place finish at the 17-team Queens Invitational held October 12-13.
The Brooks, Alberta, Canada native recorded three top-five finishes in nine tournaments and finished no worse than 25th in the 2009-10 regular season.
Overall, Gibson finished the year with the sixth-lowest scoring average in the Peach Belt at 73.2.
Of the 23 rounds played in 2009-10, he finished under par eight times.
Gibson and the Hurricanes made school history in March when they received votes for the first time in the NCAA Division II Golf World/Nike coaches’ poll.
A total of 105 players across eight regions - East, Atlantic, Southeast, South, Midwest, South Central, Central and West - earned PING All-Region honors for 2010.
