KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The Georgia Southwestern golf team took home fifth place in the 18-team Newberry College Invitational that was held at The Ocean Course. The Hurricanes shot a +40 par for a 904 total.
In the par-72, 6,853 yard course, Ryan Cahill led the way for the Hurricanes as he finished tied for 15th place, shooting +9 par 225 (74-71-80). Vincent Norrman finished tied for 19th place with score of 76-76-75 for a +11 par 227. Elias Birkeland was a +12 par 228 while Tyler Barker finished +13 par 229. Birkeland shot scores of 71-73-84 while Barker shot 76-72-81. Cole Madison rounded out GSW shooting +17 233 (77-77-79) as he was tied for 51st.
No. 6 Young Harris finished atop the standings with a final score of 896. No. 5 Florida Southern (898), No. 9 Florida Tech (902) and No. 2 Lynn (903) were the top four teams who competed.
In individuals, Joel Sylven from Missouri-St. Louis carded a 216 to take home first place, followed by Florida Southern's Michael VanDerLaan with a 217. Valter Anderson from Young Harris College 218 for third place while Yente Van Doren from Lindenwood and Andres Caballero from Clayton State both carded a 219 to cap the top five.
The Hurricanes will host the Hurricane Invitational February 25-26 in Albany, Ga. at the Doublegate Country Club.
