DEARBORN, Mich. -- Despite gaining three strokes on the event leader on Tuesday afternoon, the ninth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team slipped three spots in the overall standings to ninth place out of 20 teams after posting an 11-over-par 299 in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division II National Championship at TPC Michigan.
The Hurricanes are seven shots behind the tournament leader, No. 25 University of Indianapolis, but fell one stroke behind the cut line heading into Wednesday's final round. The top eight teams after stroke play will be seeded and advance to match play that begins Thursday to decide a national champion.
Simon Estrada led the way for GSW with an even-par 72. Estrada calmly navigated the 7,056-yard course with one birdie and one bogey over his 18 holes to tie for ninth place out of 108 golfers, three strokes off the lead.
Erik Fogel climbed eight spots in the overall individual standings and is tied for 46th following his 75 on Tuesday. Jack Tharrington and Nicolas Escobar carded scores of 76. Escobar enters the final round tied for 24th, while Tharrington is tied for 37th. Chase McLain shot a 79.
As the final five holes proved challenging for all golfers, with the 14th, 15th and 18th as the three most difficult holes throughout the event, GSW looked to gain ground on the field Tuesday after playing the 14th through 17th at 1-over as team. However, the 18th proved daunting and the Hurricanes gave those strokes back and closed the round with a 4-over on the hole.
GSW will tee off the final round on Wednesday starting at 11:10 a.m. with a 60 percent chance of rain in the forecast.
