DAVIE, Fla. — The No. 5 Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted its best round of the week, a 1-over-par 285 in the final round of the Shark Invitational on Tuesday to finish in fourth place out of 12 teams. The tournament, hosted by Nova Southeastern University, was played at the par-71, 6,725-yard Grande Oaks Golf Club and featured six programs ranked in the top 25 of NCAA Division II according to the latest Golf Coaches Association of America coaches poll.
Nicolas Escobar led the Hurricanes with a 69 in Round 3 as he birdied three of his last five holes. Escobar tied for seventh in the 72-player field with a 211 overall. Chase McLain fired a 69 in Round 2, but slipped two slots in the standings to 10th after a 71 on Tuesday. McLain finished the event tied for fifth on par 5 scoring at 6-under. Erik Fogel matched McLain on the par holes and had the Hurricanes only eagle for the week in Round 2. Fogel climbed nine spots in the final round to finish tied for 25th with a 5-over 218. Garrett Giles tied for 35th with a 222. Jack Tharrington was two strokes back of Giles and tied for 40th. Payne Sells competed as an individual and finished with a 228 to tie for 59th.
Top-ranked Barry University fired a 12-under 272 in the final round to cruise to a 17-stroke victory. No. 4 North Georgia jumped No. 8 Nova Southeastern on Tuesday to grab second place. Will O'Neill from Nova Southeastern won the individual title after defeating Ian Aldarondo from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a playoff. Both golfers closed out the tournament at 8-under.
The Hurricanes are idle for a week before resuming their fall schedule on Oct. 17, at the Otter Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif.
