GSW Men's Soccer Drops Double OT Season Opener

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The 2012 Georgia Southwestern State University men's soccer season debuted in heartbreaking fashion Thursday, as the 'Canes fell to the Newberry Wolves 2-1 in double overtime.

After a scoreless first half, the Hurricanes were first on the board when junior forward Josh Manga scored in the 54th minute of the second half. Newberry was quick to answer as five minutes later senior forward Kofi Kufour scored on a pass from Adrian Ochoa.

The score remained tied throughout the remainder of the second half and the first overtime. Three minutes into the second overtime, Newberry sophomore midfielder Nick Rembowski scored off of a rebounded save attempt from GSW keeper Cade Jones in a golden goal situation.

Overall, Newberry outshot GSW 18-6 and held a shots on goal advantage of 9-1. Senior goal keeper Cade Jones gave a good defensive effort with seven saves.

Georgia Southwestern falls to 0-1 on the season and will look to rebound as they travel to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greenville Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match.
