GSW Soars Past Falcons

AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern men's soccer freshman Chris Steinwachs scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead the Hurricanes past Florida College, 3-0, in a  non-conference match Friday afternoon.

Steinwachs, Brennan Bauschka and Charlie Curran all scored their first goals of the season for Georgia Southwestern.

The Hurricanes improve to 3-2-2 overall and 3-0-2 over their last five matches. It's the longest stretch GSW has gone without a loss in program history. Florida College falls to 6-6-1.

After a scoreless first half between the schools, Steinwachs punched in Isaac Avila's pass through the box to put the Hurricanes on top, 1-0, in the 51st minute.

Bauschka added the insurance when his goal went top shelf in the 62nd minute off a bang-bang exchange from Ron Calle and Steinwachs.

The final goal of the match was delivered by Curran at the 77:02 mark when he sent Silvio Polly's feed into the back of the net.

GSW finished with nine shots on goal, two of them belonging to Curran and two going to Trevor Dempsey.

It was the third shutout for the Hurricane defense this season as the Falcons were held to only three shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Joshua Swift (1-0) saved all three for the Hurricanes to earn a shutout in his second start of the season.

Jan Zornjan made six saves for Florida College.

Southwestern returns to action on Sunday hosting Middle Georgia State at 3:30 p.m.
