Pair Of Penalty Kicks Lift UNCP Past GSW

AMERICUS - Jordan Walshaw provided the first score of each half with converted penalty kicks to lead the University of North Carolina at Pembroke men's soccer team past Georgia Southwestern, 5-1, Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference action at Hurricane Field.

GSW falls to 1-7-1 overall, 0-3 in the PBC while UNC Pembroke improved its record to 4-4, 2-0 in conference play.

Walshaw punched in his first PK of the afternoon in the 14th minute to put UNCP on the board.

GSW's Jonathan Sayers evened the match at 1-1 when he took advantage of an open net in the 22nd minute as a shot by Silvio Polly was deflected across the box toward the far post and Sayers knocked it in.

Izzy Evans put the Braves ahead for good seconds later when he dribbled through the defense and pushed a shot past the Hurricanes charging keeper at the 22:40 mark. 

GSW trailed 2-1 at the halftime break.

Walshaw (55') and Evans (59') struck again in the second half for UNCP and the final goal came from Hunter Gregory in the 73rd minute.  

Despite the lopsided score, the shots category ended up being close, as UNCP held a slim 18-16 advantage. The Braves took six more corner kicks than GSW, 11-5 .

Joshua Swift made five saves for GSW and Lucas Gusmao stopped eight for UNCP during his 79 minutes on the pitch. Trenton Spigerer relieved Gusmao and did not have to make a stop.

The Hurricanes travel to Montevallo, Ala., on Wednesday for 7:30 p.m. Peach Belt match against the University of Montevallo.
