GSW and Webber Battle to a Draw

BABSON PARK, Fla. -- A pair of early goals gave the Georgia Southwestern State University men's soccer a two-goal lead Saturday morning but Webber International University chipped away at the deficit as the teams battled to a 2-2 tie at Warrior Field in their first-ever meeting.

GSW's Matheus Alves opened up the scoring with a quick strike in the eighth minute for his second goal of the season. Dylan Marshall followed less than six minutes later when he caught up with a long kick from goalkeeper Matthew Sherry and took it for a breakaway score.

Webber (1-0-1) cut the Hurricanes lead in half with a goal from Mateo Sassoni off a cross in the 21st minute.

It appeared the Hurricanes (0-1-1) regained momentum when Aldo Lopez received a red card for Webber with just over 34 minutes remaining in the second half, forcing the Warriors to play a man down the rest of the match, but a foul inside the 18-yard box by GSW gave the hosts a penalty kick. Baxter Smith converted the PK for Webber in what would prove to be the final score of the morning.

Despite playing a man down, Webber outshot GSW, 6-5, in the second half, while GSW managed one extra shot (3-2) across the overtime sessions.

The Hurricanes finished with an 11-6 shots on goal advantage and were whistled for six more fouls (20-14). Webber held a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
