No. 25 Lander Tops GSW, 3-0

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- The 25th-ranked Lander University men's soccer team jumped out to a two-goal lead on Georgia Southwestern State University in the opening nine minutes of their Peach Belt Conference match Saturday evening at Van Taylor Stadium and went on to defeat the Hurricanes, 3-0.

The Bearcats won their fourth consecutive match to improve their record to 10-3-2 overall, 4-1 in Peach Belt Conference play. GSW suffered its third straight loss to fall to 4-9 overall and remained scoreless in Peach Belt action, falling to 0-5. 

The Hurricanes spotted Lander the lead with an own goal in the second minute. Harry Bircumshaw recorded his fourth goal of the fall for the Bearcats with an assist from Thibault Chretien in the ninth minute to give the hosts a two-goal advantage.

GSW trailed 2-0 at the break. The late score came from Robbie Young (5) with just over 13 minutes left to play.  

Lander tallied 10 shots on goal in the match. The Hurricanes were held to one. The Bearcats finished with a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. The Hurricanes doubled Lander, the conference leader, in fouls, 12-6.

Rafael Faria and Cole Davison led GSW with a shot apiece. Keeper Oneil Lewis saved seven.
