VALDOSTA - The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams split at Valdosta State on Thursday afternoon. The women won their season opener, 5-4, while the men took a point off the 2nd-ranked team in Division II, falling 8-1. Both squads return to action at 8 a.m. Friday against West Alabama at Valdosta State.
GSW WOMEN 5, VALDOSTA STATE 4
The Georgia Southwestern women's tennis team won 4 of 6 singles matches to rally for a come-from-behind victory in their season opener at the VSU tennis courts.
The Lady Hurricanes earned singles victories from Nos. 3-6.
Freshman Kalie Douberly defeated Jessica Tuggle 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3 for her first collegiate victory.
Mollie McGowan rallied from a set down for GSW at No. 4 singles to defeat Leslie Roberge 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Melinda Vansant was victorious at No. 5 over Jayhna Pope 6-3, 6-3.
GSW picked up wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles by forfeit.
NO. 2 VALDOSTA STATE 8, GSW MEN 1
The Georgia Southwestern men's tennis team sent two singles matches to 10-point tie-breakers against VSU, winning one.
Southwestern's lone win came at No. 5, where freshman Stephen Moore, a Valdosta native, defeated Bernie Wallner 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11).
At No. 6, fellow freshman Tommy Cangelosi came up just short against Frank Sickman , losing 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6)
The Hurricanes (0-
) were swept in doubles play and did not win a game in the first three singles matches.
