National Power Columbus State Tops GSW

AMERICUS - Jake Koonce and Valentin Demande did something against the perennial national power Columbus State men's tennis team that Georgia Southwestern hadn't accomplished in almost five years: win a double match. It was the Hurricanes only team point on Wednesday afternoon as the 7th-ranked Cougars won 8-1 at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.

CSU improves to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in the Peach Belt Conference while Southwestern slips to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the PBC.

Koonce and Demande defeated Olivier Simonet and Marco Almorin, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. The last GSW doubles victory against CSU came on April 7, 2008, when Brent Bjerregaard and Brenton Hochstetler won 9-8 at No. 1.

Matt Vansant played a strong opening set, falling 7-5, against 25th-ranked Marco Almorin at No. 3 singles before losing the second, 6-1.

The Hurricanes resume match play on March 13 when they host North Georgia at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Hurricanes had their hands full with 6th-ranked Columbus State on Wednesday afternoon as the Cougars cruised to an 8-0 victory.

With the win, CSU remains perfect in 2013 at 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the Peach Belt Conference. GSW falls to 5-7, 0-4 in the PBC.

The Lady 'Canes top showing in the opening doubles matches came at No. 2 where Taylor Jones and Kalie Douberly lost 8-4.

Ginny Jones had GSW's strongest singles performance, losing at No. 4 to Laura Chapman, 6-3, 6-3.

Next up for the Southwestern women is the University of Tampa on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.
