ROME, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the young 2014 season, an 8-1 decision over Shorter University, on Sunday afternoon at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex. The GSW women's team lost to Shorter, 9-0.

Both GSW teams now hold 1-3 records this spring. The Shorter men fall to 1-3 overall and the women improve to 3-1.

Jake Koonce, Stephen Moore, Oliver Marshall and Abel Acuna were victorious in both singles and doubles play on Sunday. Joel Landis posted the most lopsided win of the day for the Hurricanes with a 6-0, 6-0 match against John Nichols at No. 6 singles.

The Hurricanes picked up two wins off matches that involved a tiebreaker. Koonce, along with Valentin Demande at No. 1 doubles against Louis Tourtois and Alexis Catillon and Moore at No. 3 singles against Robert Watson.

On the women's side, GSW's closest doubles match came at No. 2 where Kalie Douberly and Ginny Jones suffered an 8-4 setback at the hands of Samya El Hsissen and Aurore Beltrando. Victoria Ondo had the tightest match in singles play with her 6-4, 6-3 contest against El Hsissen.

Both GSW teams host Fort Valley State at 2 p.m. on Friday.
