Tennis Cruises Past Fort Valley State

FORT VALLEY, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams swept a non-conference doubleheader at Fort Valley State University on Wednesday afternoon. The men surrendered only nine games in a 9-0 win and the women had little trouble in their 7-2 victory.

Both GSW programs return to Peach Belt Conference play on Friday at 2 p.m. at Columbus State.

GSW MEN 9, FORT VALLEY STATE 0

GSW made quick work of FVSU. The Hurricanes dropped one game in three doubles matches to start the afternoon, then blanked the Wildcats in four of six singles matches.

Abel Acuna-Moreno and Andrew Greneker were perfect on the day. Neither lost a game in doubles nor singles play.

The Hurricanes improve to 4-13 this spring. Fort Valley State dropped to 3-10.

GSW WOMEN 7, FORT VALLEY STATE 2

Jamie Thomas picked up wins in both doubles and singles to lead the Lady Hurricanes past FVSU.

Thomas and her partner Anneliese Leahy rolled past Lekisha Young and Alia Hayes, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. Carly Cangelosi and Anna Kate Shaw held off Naima Simpkins and Gabriella Louis at No. 1, 9-7, to give GSW the sweep in doubles play.

FVSU had to default one doubles and a pair of singles matches due to a lack of available players. So with the match clinched after doubles competition, GSW head coach Brennon Sewell moved his players up two positions from their usual assignments for singles play. Thomas, playing No. 3 for the first time all season, defeated Young, 8-0, and Ashley Denby won her second match at No. 4 this spring, an 8-2 decision over Hayes.

The Lady Hurricanes improved their record to 5-13 overall while FVSU fell to 6-11.
