No. 6 Columbus State Spoils Season Opener

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 6 Columbus State in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex in the season opener for both schools.

The Hurricanes faced three nationally-ranked players in singles action. Steven Blythe dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to 17th-ranked K.P. Pannu at No. 1. Alex Canovas Ferrando faced off against 47th-ranked Zach Whaanga at No. 2, and lost 6-2, 6-1. Jonathan Martin lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 to 39th-ranked Jorge Vargas.

Martin and Joel Landis put up a solid effort in their doubles match at No. 3, but dropped an 8-4 decision to Vargas and Shao-Yu Yu. Canovas Ferrando and Beau Millwood lost 8-3 at No. 1 doubles to the 16th-ranked team of Pannu and Whaanga.

The Hurricanes return to action on Friday when they host Shorter University at 2 p.m.
