Blythe Wins Twice; GSW Can't Top Montevallo

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Steven Blythe picked up wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for Georgia Southwestern State University on Wednesday afternoon at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex against the University of Montevallo, but the visiting Falcons swept the non-conference doubleheader by winning the men's match, 7-2, and the women's match, 9-0. 

GSW returns to action on Friday with a non-conference tilt against Fort Valley State University at 2 p.m.


MONTEVALLO 7, GSW MEN 2 

Blythe joined Jonathan Martin at No. 1 doubles to roll past Daniel Del Val and Sergi Martinez, 8-0, to claim the Hurricanes (2-6) first team point of the day. Blythe went on to a win his No. 1 singles match in a decisive 10-point tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets. Blythe won 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) for his third singles victory of the spring. Nacho Garcia de Sola at No. 3 and Justin Ralston at No. 6 fell short of forcing a 10-point tiebreaker of their own as both Hurricanes lost their second set, 7-5, after dropping the opening set.

Montevallo improved its record to 7-1.


MONTEVALLO 9, GSW WOMEN 0

The Lady Hurricanes (5-7) had a chance for a team point at No. 1 doubles where Celia del Castillo and Maria Taboada went to a tiebreaker against Emily Beatty and Bhargavi Kalaga. before suffering a 9-8 (7-5) loss.

Singles play heavily favored the visiting Falcons. The closest match came at No. 4 where Kendall Crew lost 6-1, 6-3 to Dorotea Hanzek. 

Montevallo improved its record to 8-1.
