Twelve was the magic number for the Georgia Southwestern Lady
Canes softball team on Monday evening as they rolled past Wesleyan
College 12-7 and 12-3.
The visiting Pioneers scored three in the first and two in the
second to jump out to an early 5-0 lead in game one, but it was all
GSW from that point forward. A six run explosion in the third was
highlighted by a RBI single from Emily Oglesby and a two-run single
to center by Heather Chambers. Three Wesleyan errors also
contributed to the onslaught.
Wesleyan managed to take the lead back in the fourth with two runs
after a two out home run by Belle Thomas scored Ashley Jackson.
The ‘Canes answered with five runs of their own in the bottom
half of the frame to seal the victory. Jennifer Spradley led off
the fourth with a single. After two outs, Shea Weaver walked, Jessi
Croft singled to bring in Spradley and Weaver. Oglesby then singled
to left center to bring in Croft. Kassi Reneau capped the scoring
with a two-run home run, her second of the season, to drive in
Oglesby.
Oglesby (1-1) earned the win in game one for the ‘Canes going
three innings, striking out four and allowing five earned runs.
Croft (1) pitched three and 2/3 innings of shutout relief to get
the save.
Offensively, Oglesby helped her own cause by going 3 for 5 with two
runs batted in. Croft, Reneau and Ashley Harris added two hits
apiece. Reneau led all Hurricane batters with a season-high five
runs batted in.
Game two was much of the same for GSW. The ‘Canes scored five
in the first inning to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. Croft led
things off with a single and Reneau followed with a one out single
of her own. After Chambers was hit by a pitch, Amanda Howett
doubled to left center to drive in Croft and Reneau. Spradley then
tripled to bring around Chambers and Howett. Ashley Durden's
sacrifice fly to left brought home Spradley and ended the
‘Canes scoring in the first frame.
GSW was right back at it in the second inning when singles by
Weaver and Oglesby, along with a double from Chambers led the way
to three more Hurricane runs.
GSW added three more runs in the third. Durden led the inning off
with a single. After Samantha Hatley flew out to center and Durden
stole second, Weaver doubled down the right field line for the RBI.
Croft singled. Oglesby brought home Weaver with a sac fly. Reneau's
single brought home Croft and ended the scoring in the inning for
the ‘Canes.
The ‘Canes added another run in the fourth to bring their
total in the nightcap to 12.
Brittany Milstid (7-8) pitched three and 1/3 innings for the
‘Canes allowing only one run to get the win.
Reneau and Shea Weaver were both a perfect two for two at the
plate. Croft also chipped in with a two hit performance.
With the sweep, GSW improves to 13-17 on the season. Wesleyan drops
to 2-12. The Lady ‘Canes travel to Augusta on Wednesday to
take on Augusta State University in Peach Belt Conference action.
First pitch at ASU is slated for 2pm.
