GSW softball splits with Thomas

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Thomas University on Thursday evening at Lady 'Canes Field. GSW won Game 1, 8-2, and lost Game 2, 5-3.

The Lady Hurricanes' record falls to 14-20. Thomas sits at 15-18.

GSW scored four runs in the first inning of Game 1 and three more in the third to cruise to the win.

Gabby Buck went 3-for-4 in the opener with a walk, run scored and RBI. Katie Maddox was also 3-for-4 with a RBI. She scored two runs.

Jessica Martin (7-5) threw five innings, walked five and struck out four to get the win. Tiffany Milstid pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

In the nightcap, GSW led 2-1 after five innings, but Thomas scored four in the sixth and withstood a Lady 'Canes rally in the seventh to earn the split.

Mason Moreland drove in Erin Vick in the seventh with her first triple of the season. GSW proceeded to load the bases, but was unable to score another run.

Moreland and Heather Hodge finished with two hits apiece to lead the Lady Hurricanes.

Katie Maddox (1-2) takes the loss after allowing four runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

GSW entertains Carson-Newman on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
