GSW splits at Augusta State

AUGUSTA - The Georgia Southwestern softball team earned a split with Augusta State in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Jaguar Field. GSW rallied to get a seventh-innning win in Game 1, 4-3, while ASU took the nightcap, 8-2.

GSW finshes the day with a record of 20-22 overall and 4-8 in PBC play. Augusta State sits at 24-10 overall and 5-3 in the PBC.

The Lady Hurricanes entered the doubleheader with one win against ASU in their previous eight meetings and the Jaguars opened a 3-1 lead in Game 1 on Friday.

In the sixth inning, with a runner on base and no outs, Lyndi Duff hit her first home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3.

After GSW starter Christie Shankle retired ASU in order in the bottom of the sixth, Duff struck again, this time with a game-winning single that drove in Nichole Griffin, who had started the inning with a single.

Shankle (5-8) kept the Jaguars in check in the seventh to earn her fourth-straight win. She scattered six hits, walked one and struck out two.

Duff, Griffin and Mason Moreland finished with two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, Heather Hodge belted a solo home run in the second inning to give the Lady Hurricanes an early 1-0 advantage, but ASU scored three in the fifth and five more in the sixth to pull away for the split.

Hodge added a run for GSW in the sixth with an RBI single that drove in Gabby Buck.

Lady 'Canes starter Jessica Martin (6-6) took the loss after allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. Martin walked eight, allowed five hits and struck out two. Katie Mueller pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and was charged with five unearned runs after allowing two hits and a pair of walks.

Hodge was the lone GSW batter with multiple hits in Game 2, finishing 2-for-3.

Southwestern concludes its eight-game road trip on Saturday morning in Aiken for a PBC doubleheader with the Pacers at 11 a.m.
