AMERICUS, Ga. – It was a homecoming on Homecoming for the Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricane softball team on Saturday afternoon. Their season home opener on the school's Homecoming featured a doubleheader from in-state, and future PBC opponent, Young Harris College (3-1). The homecoming was bitter sweet for GSW as they would split games with the visiting Mountain Lions.

GAME ONE: GSW Lady 'Canes-7  Young Harris-1

The scoring action was fast and furious for Coach Ward and company as they would bring home four runners in the second inning alone to take a commanding lead of the game early on. The second inning's scoring action was punctuated by Hayley Knight, Jessica Chewning, and Mason Moreland all driving in runs.

Three innings later Katie Wooten would score on a fielder's choice, which she would follow up an inning later with a RBI of her own. Her run was supported by Ashley Cavender's run on Rachel McElroy's fielder's choice.

Young Harris would only score in the seventh inning as Jennifer Watford would drive in Emily Wilson to cut the lead to six runs at 7-1.

Jessica Martin would throw the complete game for GSW and only gave up one run . She battled to overcome five hits and eight walks but did strike out six batters to get the win.

GAME TWO:  GSW Lady 'Canes-5  Young Harris-11

The Mountain Lions would seek revenge and do so with vengeance, but only after four innings. Georgia Southwestern would blow a  5-1 lead thanks to five total errors in the game.

A pair of two-run innings in the third and fourth put GSW up 5-1. The third inning was fueled by Avery Purser's two-run double, and YHC's Jennifer Watford's and Lauren Brooks's fielding errors. The four run lead would evaporate in the fifth inning thanks to a monster, eight-run inning in the fifth by Young Harris.

Two GSW errors let two of the first three YHC runners on base before two more GSW errors aided the Mountain Lion offensive explosion that saw five different batters record a RBI in the inning. The eight-run fifth put the game out of reach at 9-5. Young Harris would get two more insurance runs in the seventh to secure the 11-5 win.

Casey Burns would get the loss as she pitched four and a third innings giving up five runs with only one of them being earned. Burns line was a similar pattern for GSW pitchers who allowed eleven runs on the game with only two of them being earned runs.

Victoria Sink would get the win for Young Harris after relieving Lisa Wilson in the fourth inning. Sink would throw three and two third innings of scoreless softball while walking one and striking out one.

It is an immediate turnaround for Georgia Southwestern (3-5 overall) who will play their second double header in as many games on Sunday against Rollins College. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
