MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – After being swept three times in the early going of the 2012 season, the Georgia Southwestern softball team was sitting at a record of 3-7 going into Friday's double header on the campus of Brewton-Parker College. The Lady 'Canes would earn their second sweep of the young season by winning a pair of one-run games by a score of 2-1 and 3-2.

GAME ONE: Georgia Southwestern-2  Brewton-Parker College-1 (8 innings)

Runners left on base were the name of the game for the Lady Hurricanes in game one of the double header against the Lady Barons. The Blue & Gold would need extra innings to score their second and game-winning run of the game. This despite collecting eleven hits, which resulted in eleven runners left on base.

Brewton-Parker would strike first with their only run of the game in the third inning when Ashley Wooton would fly out to Hayley Knight in center field, which scored Desiree' Kendrick on the play. The run would be one of the few blemishes for GSW pitcher Casey Burns on the afternoon.

GSW would not tie the game until the sixth inning when designated player Brittny Dennison would drive in Rachel McElroy on a single. The Lady Hurricanes would be unable to drive in any more runs in the inning despite having two runners on with only one out.

Fellow senior pitcher, Jessica Martin, would come into the game in the 5th inning to keep the BPC bats at-bay. Martin would throw the game's final four innings while giving up two hits, one walk and striking out five batters. She would also garner the decision by game's end to get her second win of the season.

A scoreless seventh inning for the Blue & Gold would push the game into extra innings. The game-winning hit would prove to be a RBI single by shortstop Janna Anderson. Her game-winning hit was the crown in a 3-4 day which also included a double.

Casey Burns continued her stellar early season play on the mound for the Lady 'Canes. The Hopehull, Alabama native would throw four innings giving up one-run and recording a strikeout. The senior has been charged with one earned run or less in each of her four starts this season.

GAME TWO: Georgia Southwestern-3  Brewton-Parker-2

The Lady Barons' bats would cut to the chase in game one with a RBI triple in the first inning to take the early one-run lead. Hurricane pitcher Katie Maddox would settle down and answer with four-straight scoreless innings.

The game would be won by Georgia Southwestern in the sixth inning with a three runs. Singles from Hayley Knight and Ashley Cavender would set up Gabby Buck and Rachel McElroy for RBI's. Mason Moreland would also score after she advanced from third on a throw.

GSW's hits would be spread throughout their lineup card in game two as all five hits were scattered among five different hitters.

Katie Maddox would surrender an unearned run in the BPC half of the sixth inning. She would also overcome two walks in the 7th inning to close the door on the Lady Barons and earn her first win of the 2012 season. The Macon native would throw the complete game giving up two runs with only one of them being earned with a strike out.

The season's second sweep of the year puts the Georgia Southwestern record at 5-7. It will be a quick turnaround for the Lady Hurricanes as they will return home to face Thomas University in less than 24 hours. Saturday's double header versus the Night Hawks at Lady Canes Field is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
