Sunday Sweep

AMERICUS, Ga. - Thrilling finishes seem to be the theme this season for Georgia Southwestern as the Lady Hurricanes continued their winning ways Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of the University of West Georgia Wolves.

Game 1: GSW 3, UWG 0

Junior pitcher Allison Pastor (4-1) continued her strong play with another strong pitching performance as she tossed a complete game shut out of UWG. The junior gave up five hits with six strikeouts earning her fourth straight win of the season.

Southwestern's bats came alive in the fourth inning as the Lady 'Canes notched all three of their runs off three hits.

A Janna Anderson single drove in Ashley Clifton for the first score of the game and the Blue & Gold added to it shortly after as a Rachel McElroy single drove in two more runs to give GSW a 3-0 advantage.

That brief glimpse of offense was all the Lady Hurricanes needed as Pastor completed the shutout and Georgia Southwestern prevailed, 3-0.

Anderson paced the Lady 'Canes with two hits while McElroy had two RBI's for GSW (6-3).

UWG (0-1) lost their first game of the season.

Game 2: GSW 3, UWG 2

Lady 'Cane late game heroics delivered GSW the victory in the second game of the day and the sweep of the doubleheader.

The first five innings proved to be a pitchers duel as the two teams combined for just six hits.

UWG broke the stalemate in the sixth inning when a Nicole Yancy single scored Megan Garcia for the Wolves first run of the day.

Southwestern tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth when Janna Anderson drove in Jordan Miller to tie up the game, 1-1.

In the top of the seventh, Garcia was hit by a pitch in a bases loaded situation for the Wolves, scoring a run to break the stalemate, 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lady 'Canes delivered the knockout blow for the second day in a row.

Nellie Moore started off the inning reaching base on a throwing error and a Hayley Knight single put the winning run on base. A Jordan Miller walk loaded the bases for the Blue & Gold.

Ashley Clifton delivered the final blow when her double to left center field scored the game-winning two runs to give Southwestern the 3-2 come-from-behind victory over UWG (0-2) and the sweep on the day.

Seven different Lady 'Canes had one hit apiece while Clifton paced GSW (7-3) with two RBIs.

Senior Logan Smith (1-0) earned her first win of the season while Katie Shultes (0-2) was credited with the loss in her relief effort.

GSW will be back in action Tuesday when the Lady Hurricanes travel to Valdosta State for a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. with the second game starting at 4 p.m.
