VALDOSTA, Ga. - Georgia Southwestern dropped both games to the Valdosta State Blazers Tuesday afternoon in Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.

Game 1: VSU 8, GSW 5

After sitting through a two and a half hour rain delay, the first game of the doubleheader between Georgia Southwestern and Valdosta State got underway.

VSU got on the board first as Shelby Altman hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning to give the Blazers the early advantage.

Valdosta State added to their lead in the second inning as a Hannah Strickland single drove in another run to put VSU up, 3-0.

GSW got on the board in the third inning when a Hayley Knight single drove in Avery Purser to bring the Lady Hurricanes closer, 3-1.

The Blazers scored three more runs over the next three innings, including a sixth-inning homerun by Courtney Albritton, and VSU (5-0) withstood a late GSW rally to prevail, 8-5.

Georgia Southwestern (7-4) finished with 7 hits on the game all coming from seven different Lady Hurricane players. Ashley Clifton paced GSW with two RBIs.

Lady 'Cane starting pitcher Allison Paster (4-2) was credited with the loss as the junior tossed 6 innings and gave up 8 runs on 11 hits.

Game 2: VSU 12, GSW 6

Georgia Southwestern was the first to light up the scoreboard in the second game of the doubleheader as Mason Moreland scored off an RBI groundout by Jordan Miller in the top of the first inning.

Valdosta State came back with two first inning runs of their own to put the Blazers up 2-1.

GSW countered as Hayley Knight helped chip in two runs over the next three innings for the Lady Hurricanes.

Knight reached base on an error in a bases loaded situation in the second inning scoring Rachel McElroy.

In the fourth inning, Knight drove in Janna Anderson helping the Blue & Gold regain the lead, 3-2.

Valdosta State used the long ball to do damage in the fourth and fifth innings scoring five runs off just four hits to help the Blazers build a commanding 7-2 advantage.

VSU's Fran Johnson homered to center field in the fourth inning and Candace Albrittin hit her second homerun of the day in the bottom of the 5th.

GSW joined the hitting frenzy in the sixth inning as the Lady Hurricanes rallied off a pair of homeruns of their own.

Anderson hit a solo blast to lead off the inning while Nellie Moore followed that up with one of her own.

Ashley Clifton reached base off a Valdosta State error scoring Mason Moreland to put the Lady Hurricanes within one run, 7-6.

Valdosta State was quick to thwart GSW's rallying efforts as the Blazers scored five runs in their side of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach eventually prevailing, 12-6, for the sweep.

GSW notched 10 hits on the night with Janna Anderson pacing the Hurricanes with four.

Southwestern starting pitcher Ashley Cavender was credited with her first loss of the 2013 season as the sophomore threw for 5.1 innings giving up seven runs off five hits.
