Cavender Delivers as Lady 'Canes Earn Split with Eckerd College

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - On the second day of Georgia Southwestern's two-day Sunshine State road trip, the Blue and Gold used a strong second game effort from sophomore pitcher Ashley Cavender to earn a split with Eckerd College after dropping the first game of the day.

Game 1: Eckerd 8, GSW 5

A first inning home run from GSW's Jordan Miller started the day off on a good foot for the Lady Hurricanes but the Tritons answered scoring three runs over the second and third innings to take a 3-1 advantage.

GSW notched four runs off four hits, including a RBI double by Elliot Martin to regain the lead 5-4 in the top of the fourth.

EC tied up the score in their half of the fourth inning off a wild pitch.

Eckerd took control over their next two innings as the Tritons scored three runs off three hits on their way to an 8-5 victory.

Erin Vick (2-3) took the loss for GSW (11-8) as the junior tossed for 2.1 innings giving up four runs off three hits and striking out three.

Game 2: GSW 2, Eckerd 0

In the second game of the day, starting GSW pitcher Ashley Cavender was determined to carry the Lady 'Canes to a split on the day and didn't disappoint as she simply put on a show against the Tritons.

Cavender didn't give up a hit through the first five innings but an infield single from Chelsea Jeffares in the bottom of the sixth inning spoiled the no-hit bid.

Both teams struggled offensively as the game turned into a pitcher's dual as both teams were held scoreless after six innings of play.

GSW broke the stalemate in the top of the seventh scoring two runs.

That offensive output was all the Lady Hurricanes needed to earn a split on the day to end the weekend road trip on a high note.

Cavender (3-3) was credited with the win as the sophomore finished with a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit with one walk and striking out three for Southwestern.

Georgia Southwestern (12-8) will be back in action Wednesday, Feb. 27, as GSW travels to Thomasville, Ga. to take on Thomas University in double-header action. The first game is set for 1 p.m.
